The images are from NASA’s Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). Google uses the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) provided by SRTM to accurately portray the mountains and buildings. Updates typically only happen when something significant happens in an area, rendering the pictures and data inaccurate.
