What Affect Does Technology Have On Classrooms?

Computer technology has brought a lot to the classroom enabling students to research, learn and interact with the world. While there is a lot of good that comes out of computer technology, there is also a bad side to computer technology schools. Mainly, because of mandated test scores and curriculum that needs to be taught for the best test scores.

At one time, teachers were able to teach their own curriculum as long as the students were learning and met certain bench marks. Everyone, had a teacher they liked. This type of teacher was the type that gave projects and hands on activities that brought the material to life for the student. It was more than just memorizing facts that would be on an important test that decided the school’s fate.

The problem is that a computer testing system can only base whether the student is learning or not based on test scores. Therefore, students going at slower pace are judged harshly, when the score that they get is actually a great achievement for them. They are left behind and forced to take preparatory course or courses to past, as is the case with many school districts that have state graduation tests.

While computers have their place in schools and they should always have their place in schools. They should be taken out of the equation when determining if a student is learning or not. Teachers should be able to be trusted to teach their students the material they need to know, instead of having a test make sure that is case. Only when we go back to the old way of teaching will we have personable and social young adults who are able to think for themselves and absorb and learn the material in a meaningful and fulfilling way.

How The Internet Affects The Future Of Journalism

Until recently Journalism and Computer Science were two different fields entirely. People who wanted to write didn’t see the need to manage or maintain a computer program or blog, while computer science professionals didn’t see the need to write either. However, currently a person that is proficient in both is able to make a great living with both of these skills. Journalism students at New York University learned this first hand.

The experiment took place at the New York University at the Tisch School of Arts and the students used cameras to track activity through the building. This experiment was to teach them that they needed the use of computers to know what would be appealing to people today. This education enables them to write relevant articles that get them job opportunities or help them to create a relevant and current blog.

In the past, a journalist’s only job was to do the writing and let the printer or someone else take care of the rest. However, with print media fading away or at least scaling down from what it used to be, there is a need for journalists to understand how to make their works come alive on the Internet. There are many places that will still handle the computer side of things, but they do take their cut.

On the other hand, a computer science major may ask why they should major in journalism also when they could make a lot of money doing just the computer science. With the age of affiliate marketing opening up possibilities to earn a six figure income through maintaining a website, it’s worth it to not only manage the website but to save money without having to hire a writer.

Homeschoolers Have More Access To Technology Than Public And Private Schooled Students

Public and private school is often seen as a better education than students who learn through homeschooling. However, while school students may have access to peers socially on a daily basis and have activities to go through and halls to walk through. There are disadvantages of going to school. One of the major ones is the lack of technology in schools. Considering how important computer and technology skills are becoming, this leaves students at a major disadvantage unless they learn it by themselves.

We have to consider the standard public and even private school budget. Schools struggle to stay up with new textbooks, so it makes it harder on the school to fit in a full time technology specialist who knows about computers. If they do hire someone that person is often inexperienced and unable to handle the scale, that and they are assigned to many schools not just one. Another problem is keeping up with the current computer and computer software. Schools are lucky to have 1 or 2 computer labs to teach computer classes, but have yet to have enough computers for each student to have a computer.

Students that engage in homeschooling however are a completely different story, with more and more homeschooling taking place on the computer families often keep their computers and software updated. Not only that, but students that learn at home often learn things such as social networking to keep in touch with each other. They graduate with a GED or diploma with not only the skills that a high school graduate knows but also technology skills that public school students are not likely to have. At some point schools will become able to gain knowledge that exceeds the technology knowledge of a home schooled student, but until then this is just one more perk of homeschooling.

And what makes it even easier is that you don’t have to get in your car, drive to a store, find the software program you’re looking for, pay for it, drive home and then install it on your computer. Companies have made it simple to download software that is pretty unbelievable! You just have to search for what you want and then you can download it right then and there and be on your way. Optimizing your computer or server, organizing your recipes, learning a new computer program, losing weight, listening to music or even playing a new game can be fast and simple. It doesn’t get much easier than that!
