The Next Generation of Laser Disks

Currently Blu-ray disks and disk players are the most current technology in playing movies and other things, but the blue-violet laser may put that technology to shame. This new technology is currently being developed between Sony and Tohoku University. It’s main purpose will be for disk storage, movies and TV shows that you can download from your direct.tv satellite service.

The technology works by using a laser a 405 nanometer wave length this immediately puts in in the blue-violet region of the light spectrum. It’s able to generate optical pulses at an astounding rate of 3 trillionths of a second. It’s expected to have an output of 100 watts. It’s currently 100 times more powerful than most semiconductor lasers making it truly more advanced than current technology.

In the past similar lasers have required a bulky light source and a specialist to run it, which made it impossible for home use for those of us who aren’t experts in this technology. However, with this new advancement it’s quite possible to be used in many different areas including consumer use as well.

The current outlook for using this for consumer usage is to take advantage of the disk space and ease of use to make it the next generation of disk players. Tests that have been run on the laser for this type of use are so far successful. These disks will be able to hold 20 times more than a Blu-ray disk is able to. So with this technology we’ll be able to watch a series of Harry Potter movies together or the entire season of our favorite shows on one disk. There’s not any news on when this will be available for consumer use, but we can already start budgeting to replace our Blu-ray Movie and TV show collection, though it should cost less to do so.
