Most people have cell phones these days. What was once a gadget owned by a few has become a commonplace item owned by people from all walks of life.

However, the cost of owning a cell phone can be prohibitive. There are things you can do to get an affordable rate for your cell phone, both in terms of purchasing a phone and paying the monthly bill. Whichever affordable cell phone or service plan you choose, you can pay your monthly bills using a prepaid card.

One way to save money when buying a cell phone is to not get the very latest model. Sometimes the phone carriers will offer you a deal where you get a refurbished phone for free when you sign up for a service plan. Typically, this means you get a cell phone model that has been on the market for about a year, instead of the one that was released a couple of months ago.

When deciding on a service plan, use the Internet to help you get affordable rates. If you go to the websites for the major carriers, you can enter your zip code and find out what the best deals are in your area. Compare what the best available rate is on a few different sites, and then determine which is best for you.

Evaluate what kinds of features come with different cell phone plans. If all you’re looking for is a cell phone to have handy in case of emergencies or to check in briefly with friends and family, then a plan that includes texting and similar features may not be right for you.

Why Cell Phones?

Cell phones. You see them everywhere you go, just about everyone you know seems to be constantly attached to one. It kind of makes you wonder what the big deal is, why so many people are carrying these little boxes around that keep them oh so very connected to everyone else they know. Why would anyone want so much availability? Why not?

First of all, there’s just something fascinating about a little box that can be carried in your pocket, and be used to communicate with anyone anywhere. (As long as you have service.) But most people don’t think about this, they just buy one in zombie-like fashion, just because “everyone else has one”. This is not a reason to buy something, yet, it’s what we as a society tend to do. It’s the whole “keeping up with the Jones’s” syndrome.

But, seriously, what is not to like about cell phones? It’s astounding just how fast they went from just a mobile telephone to something much more amazing and complex than would have been thought of even 20 years ago! Now, not only can we talk on cell phones, we can text, surf the internet, play music, or use cool apps. There are just so many new and old ways to keep in touch with family and friends using cell phones.

But sometimes, as much as we love being so connected to the world, every once in a while it is healthy to take a break for an hour or two, or a day, and turn our cell phones off. This break can be used to relax from our hectic schedules.

All in all, cell phones are a wonderful form of technology and very useful in this day and age of no phone-booths. They are great to have and use.
